SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman reserve forward Rory Spencer has sustained a stress reaction in his right foot and will be out of action indefinitely, announced Upstate head coach Eddie Payne.
"Our difficult task just got more difficult as one of our key post players is out indefinitely," said Payne. "We will have to adapt to make up for his loss."
Spencer began experiencing pain in his right foot on Dec. 27 after returning from a short Christmas break following a three-game road trip in Texas last week. Dr. Steve Singleton of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas examined Spencer and diagnosed the freshman with a stress reaction. How well Spencer reacts to the rehabilitation and treatment plan will determine how long he will be out of the lineup.
"We have embarked on an aggressive treatment plan that will allow Rory to safely return as quickly as possible," said Singleton.
Spencer has been a key reserve off the bench for Upstate this season. The College Park, Ga., native has been one of the first players off the bench. He averages 2.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, playing an average of 12.9 minutes per game. He turned in a career-high nine points to go along with four rebounds against Akron in the first round of the BP Top of the World Classic (Nov. 16). He gave the Spartans a lot of energy and four rebounds in the 58-56 victory at SMU last week, the Spartans' first win over a Division I opponent in the history of the program.
