
Gallman 2nd, Spartans 3rd at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

Sunset Beach, N.C. - Sophomore sensation Josh Gallman fired a 4-under-par 68 to lead the USC Upstate men's golf team into a tie for third place in the first round of the three-day, three-round Sea Trail Intercollegiate at the 6,761-yard, par-72 Jones Course at the Sea Trail Golf Resort Friday afternoon.
Gallman was 3-under-par on the front nine and 1-under on the back to pace the Spartans on the day. Gallman finished second to teammate Michael Lawrence at the Rutgers Invitational last week as the duo led Upstate to the team championship. The Spartans are back in title contention this week after a solid opening round.
Upstate also got strong individual performances from Baxter Culler and Jamie Lightsey. Culler opened the tournament with a 2-under 70 and is tied for eighth, while Lightsey was at even-par 70. Tyler Tucker turned in a 4-over 76, while Lawrence came in with a 78. Elon's Steve Dressel leads the tournament after firing a 67.
Upstate used the strong performances from Gallman, Culler and Lightsey to pull into a tie for third with Guilford College with a 286 total. The Spartans trail host Elon by nine strokes. The Phoenix opened with a 279 and leads by one stroke over second-place Bethune-Cookman. Gardner-Webb (287) is one stroke back of Upstate and Guilford and is followed by William & Mary (288), Murray State (288), Wofford (288), Radford (289), High Point (290), Belmont Abbey (291), Delaware (293), Navy (294), Villanova (297), Stetson (298), South Carolina State (298), Appalachian State (300), James Madison (302) and Hampton (333) in the 19-team field.
