SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - USC Upstate men's golfer and Gaffney native Josh Gallman shot a 4-under-par 68 for the second straight day to move into first place after 36 holes of the 54-hole Sea Trail Intercollegiate at the Sea Trail Golf Resort Saturday afternoon. Gallman is 8-under for the tournament and is tied with Wofford's Mike McKenzie for the tournament lead heading into the final round on the 6,761-yard, par-72 Jones Course.
Gallman is one of just three players in the tournament to record two rounds in the 60's. His efforts have helped the Spartans stay in contention for a strong finish. Upstate currently sits in a tie for sixth place with a 571 total. The Spartans followed Friday's opening round 286 with a 285 Saturday. Elon, which is playing host to the tournament, is in first place with a 552 total. Wofford is in second with a 565 total and is followed by Murray State (567), Belmont Abbey (567), William & Mary (570), Upstate, Bethune-Cookman (571), Gardner-Webb (573), Guilford (574), Delaware (578), High Point (579), Radford (580), Navy (580), Appalachian State (584), Villanova (588), Stetson (590), South Carolina State (592), James Madison (604) and Hampton (654) in the 19-team field.
Upstate enters Sunday's final round 19 strokes out of first, but just six shots out of second place. The Spartans won the Rutgers Invitational last week and are looking for another strong finish to begin the 2007-08 season.
Spartan Baxter Culler has also played solid golf for the Spartans. He carded a 69 Saturday and stands in a tie for eighth with a 5-under-par 139 total. Michael Lawrence shot a 1-under 71 Saturday and is in a tie for 65th. Jamie Lightsey stands tied with Lawrence and three other players at 65th, while Tyler Tucker is in a tie for 84th.
The tournament will conclude Sunday at the Sea Trail Golf Resort in the coastal hamlet of North Carolina just above the North Carolina/South Carolina border above the Grand Strand.
