Fans waited for Chris Nowak to leave the baseball field after a recent game and caught him before he made it to the tunnel that leads to the clubhouse.
They asked for his autograph and wanted to have their picture taken with Nowak, a former USC Spartanburg player who was drafted by Tampa Bay after his junior season and is on the rise with the Montgomery (Ala.) Biscuits.
Nowak is a favorite at River Walk Stadium, which sits next to the Alabama River in the historic downtown. They know him well. He played there last year, hitting better than .300 with seven home runs and leading the beloved Biscuits to their second straight Southern League championship.
"People just love the team here," Nowak said. "They want us all to be successful."
They might have wondered if they would see him again in Montgomery after that title series.
