2008 USC Upstate Men's Golf Fall Schedule
Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate head men's golf coach Todd Lawton will call upon a veteran group of players to lead the team into its second year competing on the NCAA Division I level. The veteran players will get an early dose of play with six tournaments in the fall as Lawton announces the 2008 fall golf schedule.
Upstate returns six seniors and two juniors to the team, while picking up prized recruits Scott Boston, Tyler Comer, Bryan Otis and Nick Urso for the 2008-09 season.
Upstate will play in six tournaments in the fall. The spring schedule has not yet been finalized and will be released later this fall. The Spartans will open the season Sept. 12-13 at the Rutgers Invitational, the scene of one of the program's most historic victories. Upstate won the tournament championship in its first tournament playing on the Division I level with Michael Lawrence taking home individual tournament medalist honors.
In addition to the Rutgers Invitational, Upstate will play in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate hosted by Elon, Hartford Hawks Intercollegiate hosted by Hartford, Stono Cup hosted by College of Charleston, ODU Seascape Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion and Stetson/CFSC Fall Invitational hosted by Stetson.
"The Hartford tournament will be a 20-plus team event with schools from conferences that sends teams to the national championships including the ACC and Colonial Athletic conferences," said Lawton. "Adding the Hartford and Stono Cup events to the tournaments that were holdovers from last year definitely strengthens our schedule. I feel confident we should be at least where we were last fall. Josh (Gallman) and Baxter (Culler) have certainly shown they are ready to play and we added some talented recruits. We are excited about getting up to Rutgers and starting the season."
Upstate had a tremendous first season playing on the Division I level in 2007-08. The Spartans won the team tournament championships at the Rutgers Invitational and the BSC Invitational. Three Spartans combined to win six individual tournament titles, with Gallman leading the way with four titles. He claimed the individual titles at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and Stetson/CFSC Fall Invitational tournaments in the fall and the Lonnie D. Small Classic and Samford Intercollegiate tournaments in the spring. He was an A-Sun First-Team All-Conference selection and was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Month three of the six times in was awarded. Lawrence claimed the title at the Rutgers Invitational, while Tyler Tucker claimed the individual championship at the BSC Invitational.
