Sunset Beach, N.C. - Baxter Culler turned in a 2-under 70 to lead Upstate to a team score of 298 and in a tie for third after the first round of the Sea Trail Intercollegiate played on the 6,761-yard, par-72 Jones Course at the Sea Trail Resort Friday.
Upstate is tied with Wofford in third place, three strokes back of Murray State who stands in first place after shooting a 295. A-Sun foe Stetson is in second place after turning in a 296. The Spartans are one shot ahead of UNC Pembroke and Elon in the 18 team field. Bethune-Cookman (300), Appalachian State (301), Belmont Abbey (302) and Tennessee Tech (302) round out the top-10 after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Culler is tied for second after carding a 70 on the day. Tyler Tucker was the second-lowest Spartan, shooting an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth. Freshman Bryan Otis opened the tournament with a 77 and is tied for 42nd. Jamie Lightsey turned in a 79 and is tied for 63rd, while Michael Lawrence is tied for 72nd after carding an 80 in the opening round.
Upstate is playing without Josh Gallman who committed to be in the wedding of a close friend in his hometown prior to the schedule being finalized. Despite Gallman's absence, the Spartans are in prime position in the tournament with Culler leading the way. Culler stands one shot back of tournament leader Steve Dressel from Elon. Dressel shot 3-under on the front nine to vault out to the 18-hole lead. Culler was 2-under on the back nine.
