SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's basketball team, facing the graduation of point guards Courtney Hawkins (Greer, S.C./Greer) and Koko Richardson (Mary Esther, Fla./Santa Fe C.C.) has added another guard to its recruiting class for the 2010-11 season, announcing Kyana Jacobs (Dale City, Va./Potomoc) signed her NLI to attend USC Upstate on Saturday morning.
"We are really excited to have Kyana join the Upstate basketball family," Upstate head coach Tammy George said. "She is a great floor general with good court vision. She is a tremendous passer, but she can also score. She likes to slash to basket and she is able to get to the rim to finish. She has a lot of game experience and we think that will only help as she transitions to the collegiate game.
A 5-6 point guard, Jacobs has earned three letters at Potomac High School, also earning three All-Cardinal District selections. A three-time team MVP, Jacobs earned First Team All-Northwest Region and second team all-area honors as a junior after averaging 15.4 points, five assists, three steals and four rebounds per game. As a sophomore, the point guard averaged 15 points and five assists per game, helping her earn Washington Post All-Extra team honors. As a freshman, Jacobs averaged 14 points and three assists per game to earn Second Team All-Northwest Region honors.
Also active in club basketball, Jacobs has played for the Fairfax Stars, Virginia Magic, Team Excel, the Metro South All-Stars and the Prince William County Virginians. She was also invited to the Michael T White Top 10 Underclassmen camp.
Jacobs is highly touted by several recruiting Web sites, being ranked 75th in the nation at point guard by ESPN Hoop Gurlz.com and she is listed 264th in the nation by the Collegiate Girls' Basketball Report. She is also ranked 68th in the nation at point guard by CGBR.
Earlier this week, Upstate also signed 5-10 post Kim Roach (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora). Roach, who has earned four letters with the Falcons, earned Class AAA All-State honors from both the AP and the High School Sports Report. She also earned all-region and all-area honors as a junior, averaging 15.9 points per game. She was named one of the top five girls' high school players in the class of 2010 by SouthernHoops.net and she was also an all-region selection as a sophomore.
Meanwhile, she has played on one of the best teams in the state, helping A.C. Flora earn state rankings in each of the last four seasons, including the squad posting a 14-8 record in 2008-09 and a final ranking of 23rd in the state. Also active in club basketball, Roach played with the GA/Lina 76'ers Nike Team, part of the D&D Development program run by Jerome Dickerson, a former professional NBA trainer. She was also a part of the 2009 Junior/Senior Elite Showcase at Elon University this summer, being named one of the top 50 prospects at the prestigious camp. Roach also played volleyball for the Falcons.
"We are really excited to have Kim join the Upstate family," Upstate head coach Tammy George said. "She is an undersized post that is going to create a lot of match-up problems for other teams. She plays much bigger than her size and she is very athletic. She comes from a great program at A.C. Flora and she knows what it takes to be a success."
Upstate (1-0 overall) will get back on the court on Monday at Longwood at 7 p.m.
