Blythewood, S.C. - USC Upstate golfers Josh Gallman and Tyler Comer made the cut after the first of two rounds in the sectional qualifying tournament for the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship Monday afternoon at the Columbia Country Club.
Gallman and Comer will return to the 7,095-yard, par-71 course Tuesday with the hopes of being one of just a few golfers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. Gallman opened the tournament with an even-par 71, having bogeyed his final two holes. He currently stands tied for 14th. Comer turned in a 73 and made the cut by one stroke. He currently stands tied for 33rd.
Both Gallman and Comer will need to pick up strokes in the second and final qualifying round in order to make it into the field for the U.S. Amateur. Corey Nagy turned in a strong 6-under-par 65 to take the lead into Tuesday's final round. Twelve other players turned in rounds under-par on the day.
Gallman and Comer were not the only Spartan golfers to compete in the sectional qualifying tournament. Michael Lawrence (74), Baxter Culler (76) and Bryan Otis (78) failed to make the cut into the second round of play.
The 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship will be played Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
