Upstate Signee Roseboom Selected In 47th Round Of MLB Draft By Red Sox

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Incoming USC Upstate freshman David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) became the first signee in the school's Division I era to be drafted out of high school during the third day of the MLB draft on Wednesday, as the Boston Red Sox called the left-handed pitcher's name in the 47th round.
“I'm excited for Dave and happy that he was drafted,” Upstate head coach Matt Fincher said. “It's a neat thing to be drafted out of high school. That is something he can be really proud of. We are excited for him that a pro team took note of the spring that he had. We're hopeful that he'll come to Upstate in the fall.”
The 6-3 southpaw starred at the LaSalle Institute as a senior, racking up strikeouts with a mid-80s fastball and good control. He enjoyed a stellar senior year and ran his career record to 26-4, including striking out 11 in a 1-0 shutout of Christian Brother Academy on May 13 and he helped lead LaSalle to its seventh straight Big 10 Conference title.
He posted a 6-2 record with a 2.39 ERA as a junior, earning Honorable Mention Louisville Slugger High School All-American honors. As a sophomore, he posted a 9-0 mark to go with a 1.42 ERA, helping him earn Second Team Louisville Slugger Pre-Season High School All-American honors going into his junior campaign.
The southpaw also played travel ball for the South Troy Dodgers, helping him draw interest from several other major schools like Mississippi, Virginia and West Virginia before signing with Upstate in the fall. Roseboom also competed as a jumper on LaSalle's track and field team.
Roseboom joins senior Matt Branham (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) as players with connections to USC Upstate in the draft. Branham, the Spartans' all-time strikeouts king was selected in the 27th round of the 2010 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres, becoming both the first player in school history to enter the Padres organization and the first player in school history to be drafted twice as a Spartan.
USC Upstate finished the 2010 season with a 19-37 record under 13th-year head coach Matt Fincher.
