Indian Land, S.C. – Former USC Upstate golfer and Easley, S.C., native Michael Lawrence carded rounds of 72 and 65 to finish tied for fourth in the Carolina Lakes tournament on the Carolinas Pro Golf Tour Wednesday afternoon.
Lawrence helped build Upstate's foundation on the Division I level and completed his eligibility last spring, He won the individual championship in Upstate's first tournament playing on the Division I level, taking the title at the Rutgers Invitational in the fall of 2007.
The Carolina Lakes tournament was shortened to a 36-hole event because of weather conditions yesterday. Lawrence opened the tournament with an even-par 72, then went low in his second round. He posted a 7-under 65 to vault into a tie for fourth. He finished three strokes behind tournament winner Jay Haas, Jr.
Lawrence turned pro in May and claimed second place, behind fellow former Upstate teammate Josh Gallman, in the River Falls event on the Carolina Mountain Tour. After taking a few weeks off to work on his game in late-July, he picked up his first professional win at the Riverbend event on the Carolina Mountain Tour. He now has two top five finishes with a win in his last two tournaments.
