SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Former USC Upstate pitcher Matt Branham has been promoted within the San Diego Padres organization. Branham was promoted today from Eugene (Ore.) and will join the Fort Wayne (Ind.) TinCaps, the Padres Class-A Affiliate.
After being selected in the 27th-round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Padres, Branham joined the Class-A Short-Season Eugene Emeralds. The Columbia, S.C., native started his professional career with a 1-3 record in his first six starts and a 4.09 ERA.
Since dipping to 1-3, Branham picked up five consecutive victories to improve to 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA in 14 total appearances, including 11 starts.
In Branham's last eight outings, Branham was 5-0 with a 2.36 ERA with 38 strikeouts. In his victory over Yakima (Aug. 4), he recorded a career-high seven strikeouts. Over those eight outings, Branham allowed two runs or less in seven of the eight games.
Branham was the team leader in wins with his six victories and he led the Emeralds starters with his 2.97 ERA and walks/hits per inning pitched of 1.25. He ranked second on the team in innings pitched (60.2) and third in strikeouts (56).
Branham held batters to a .266 batting average, including a .214 average at home. Branham allowed just one homerun during his time in Eugene.
