Spartans Slip to Sixth at A-Sun Championships

Braselton, Ga. – On a day when USC Upstate struggled on the greens, the Spartans turned in a 294 to slip four spots and into a tie for sixth at the 2011 A-Sun Men's Golf Championship on the Chateau Course at the Chateau Elan Resort Tuesday afternoon.
Upstate began the day in a tie for second after firing a first round 285 on Monday. The Spartans carded a 294 in the second round and slipped four spots and into a tie for sixth with East Tennessee State at 579. The tournament will conclude with the final round on Wednesday with the Spartans looking to improve on its sixth-place finish from a year ago.
Upstate golfer Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) remained on the first page of the leaderboard. He finished the day with a 3-over-par 74 and stands tied for sixth at 2-under for the tournament. He trails the tournament leader, Kennesaw State's Jeff Karlsson, at 6-under.
Kennesaw State remained in the lead with a 563 total over 36 holes. North Florida is tied for second at 568 along with Campbell. Florida Gulf Coast is fourth at 570 and is followed by Belmont (576), Upstate (579), ETSU (579), Mercer (583), Jacksonville (584), Stetson (594) and Lipscomb (601).
Tyler Comer (Pacolet Mills, S.C.) led the way for Upstate on Tuesday. He carded an even-par 71. After bogeying his first hole, he recovered with a birdie on the par-4 seventh. He gave a stroke back on the par-5 ninth hole. After falling to 2-over for the round with a bogey on the par-4 13th, he recorded birdies on the par-5 15th and the par-4 18th to finish at even par. He is tied for 14th with a 143 total.
Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.), playing in his first A-Sun Championship, was the second-lowest Spartan on the day. The freshman carded a 73 with a birdie and three bogeys. He is tied for 23rd with a 146 total.
After taking double bogey to start the round, Hopper played the final 17 holes at 1-over-par to finish with a 74. He is tied for sixth with a 140 total. Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) carded a 76 on Tuesday and is 44th with a 150 total, while Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) is tied for 50th with a 154 total. He shot 79 on Tuesday.
