Myrtle Beach, S.C. – USC Upstate golfer and Spartanburg native Nelson Dickson opened play at the Carolinas Amateur Championship Thursday by firing a 2-under-par 70 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club and stands tied for fourth heading into the second round on Friday.
Dickson, who is awaiting word from the NCAA on an appeal to grant him a final year of eligibility with the Spartans, has had quite a summer of golf and is continuing his solid play in the Carolinas Amateur Championship. He advanced to the semifinals of the South Carolina Match Play Championship last month before qualifying for the tournament this week.
The Carolinas Amateur Championship is celebrating its 97th year conducting the tournament and has returned to the renowned Dunes Golf and Beach Club for the sixth time.
Dickson bogeyed the par-4 second hole before posting three birdies to go out in 2-under-par 34 on Thursday. He claimed birdies on the par-5 fourth, par-4 sixth and par-5 eighth holes. After seven-straight pars, he moved to 3-under for the round with a birdie on the par-4 16th before making bogey on the par-4 18th to shoot even on the back nine and 2-under 70 for the round.
Dickson is tied for fourth with three other players, including Justin Hoft, Jordan Sease (Winthrop) and Matth Yelverton. Skip Taylor opened the tournament with a 68 to take the lead by a stroke over Jacob Colley (East Carolina) and Hayden Garrett, who opened with 69 on Thursday.
The 72-hole tournament will continue with the second round on Friday.
