Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate men's golfer and Gaffney, S.C., native Adam Goins started the season off with a bang when he won the Rutgers Invitational last weekend. He received even more acclaim Wednesday by earning the A-Sun's first Golfer of the Week selection for the 2011-12 season.
Goins, a sophomore, has had a terrific start to his collegiate career. He won the individual championship at the Caribbean Classic last March, becoming the first freshman to win an individual title in the history of the Upstate program. Last weekend, he came through again with his second career title.
Goins opened the Rutgers Invitational (Sept. 16-17) with a 3-over-par round of 74. He rebounded, though, to shoot 69 in the second round and closed out the tournament with a 69 to finish at 1-under. He finished the 54 holes tied with teammate Tyler Comer (Spartanburg) and the two decided the individual championship in a playoff. On the first playoff hole, Goins made par to earn the championship.
"It's a great honor for Adam to receive the award," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I know that he will enjoy it, but will also use the recognition to work harder to be a better golfer. As his career moves forward, I hope he has the opportunity to win the award again."
Goins not only won the individual championship, but Upstate took home the team championship behind the play of Goins and Comer, as well as placing four players in the top 10 individually. It was the second team championship for the Spartans in four appearances in the Rutgers Invitational and the third individual championship in the tournament.
Goins' selection as Golfer of the Week is the first conference weekly or monthly recognition for an Upstate golfer since Josh Gallman earned three Golfer of the Month selections in 2007-08. Gallman, also from Gaffney, went on to be a three-time A-Sun All-Conference selection and is currently playing professional golf.
