SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball program and head coach Matt Fincher released the 2013 baseball schedule Wednesday afternoon, featuring 35 home games and matchups against South Carolina, Clemson, Kentucky and Georgetown.
The Spartans will open the 2013 slate with 13 of their first 16 games at home, including the their season-opening weekend Feb. 15-17, when they will play host to Niagra University, the University of Kentucky and Georgetown University.
"We put together a tough non-conference schedule that we think will prepare us for the grueling 27 games in the Atlantic Sun," head coach Matt Fincher said.
During the home-heavy portion of the schedule in the opening weeks, Upstate will welcome
George Washington to town for a three-game weekend set, while Marshall and Dayton come calling the opening weekend of March.
"After experiencing some success last season it is important for us to get off to a good start and carry that momentum into the 2013 campaign," Fincher said. "Hopefully with a bulk of our games at home to start the season we will be able to do that."
The Spartans will travel to Carolina Stadium March 12 to take on national powerhouse South Carolina, National Champions from two of the last three years and last season's National Finalist. First pitch against the Gamecocks is slated for 7 p.m.
Upstate also has a date with Clemson University May 14 as the Spartans will make the one-hour trek down Interstate 85 to face the Tigers at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Spartans open Atlantic Sun Conference play March 15-17, when they welcome ETSU to town for a weekend set, one of five A-Sun series at Harley Park. Upstate will also play host to league newcomer Northern Kentucky, Stetson and Mercer before North Florida comes to town May 16-18 to cap the regular season.
A-Sun action on the road features series at Jacksonville, Lipscomb, FGCU and Kennesaw State as the Spartans look to continue the success of last season's team that finished runner-up in the regular season and made the squad's first A-Sun Championship appearance.
The 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship will be held at Stetson University May 22-25 in DeLand, Fla. The top six teams will advance to the A-Sun Tournament with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA National tournament.
