
Cornfield Paces Spartans at Wendy's Kiawah Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – For the second straight day, freshman Ryan Cornfield paced the Spartans as the USC Upstate men's golf team completed play in the second round of the 54-hole Wendy's Kiawah Classic Monday afternoon.
Cornfield (Dudley, England) shot a 74 to follow-up a first round 71 from Sunday. He currently stands tied for 12th with a 145 total heading into Tuesday's final round at the Jack Nicklaus designed Turtle Point course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
While Cornfield continued to turn in solid rounds, the rest of the Spartans struggled on Monday with the team shooting a 320. The round was 18 strokes higher than Sunday's first round of 302. The Spartans were not alone in shooting a higher score as 22 of the 26 teams shot rounds higher on Monday than in the first round on Sunday. Upstate was in 11th-15th position throughout most of the round on Monday, but struggled coming in to post the 320. The five Spartans played the final five holes at 12-over-par and were 26-over on the back nine, collectively.
Upstate currently stands tied for 21st in the 26-team field. South Carolina shot a 293 on Monday and owns the tournament lead heading into the final round on Tuesday. The Gamecocks own a 575 total and lead the College of Charleston by seven strokes.
Wisconsin is third with a 587 total and is followed by Winthrop (589), Western Kentucky (594), Jacksonville State (596), Campbell (600), Radford (602), Presbyterian (604), Stetson (605), Marquette (606), St. John's (607), High Point (609), William & Mary (609), UConn (610), Utah Valley (611), Charleston Southern (612), Loyola (Md.) (615), George Washington (618), Francis Marion (620), Upstate (622), Boise State (622), Towson (628), Mount St. Mary's (632), Butler (636) and Bradley (640).
Upstate received a 74 from Cornfield, but the rest of the team scores were in the 80s. Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) each shot 81. Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) and Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) each shot 84. Cornfield and Horton each recorded three birdies to highlight the round.
Stetson's Dustin Dingus fired a 2-under-par 69 to vault into the individual lead. He owns a 141 total and will start the final round with a one-stroke lead.
