Spartanburg, S.C. - After turning in a strong final round at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic last week, the USC Upstate men's golf team will close out the fall season in a familiar place, traveling to Victoria Hills Country Club for the Stetson/CFSC Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
Upstate is making its fifth appearance in the Stetson/CFSC Invitational. The Spartans are returning to the tournament after not playing last season. However, they competed in the event in the four years prior to last season with former standouts Josh Gallman and Michael Lawrence claiming individual titles in the event.
The Stetson/CFSC Invitational is hosted by Stetson at Victoria Hills. The course plays at 7,149 yards and is a par-72 layout. Four A-Sun schools will be among the nine teams in the field. Joining Upstate and Stetson and representing the A-Sun are Florida Gulf Coast and Lipscomb. Bethune-Cookman, Central Florida, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic and Savannah State will join the A-Sun schools in the tournament.
Coming off of a win at the Rutgers Invitational in September, Upstate struggled in the first two rounds of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic last week. However, the team rallied in the final round, posting one of the Top 10 rounds on the day, to build momentum for this week.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Ryan Cornfield, Adam Goins, Brad Sill, Matthew Hopper and Sebastian Lopez Bulla into action this week. Cornfield, Goins, Sill and Hopper have played in every tournament so far this fall. Lopez Bulla, a freshman, is making his tournament debut. Cornfield has simply been outstanding in leading the team as a freshman. He tops the club with a 75.2 stroke average and has one Top 10 finish. Goins is second at 75.7 and won the individual championship at the Rutgers Invitational. Upstate averages a 306.7 per round this season, shooting a low round of 289 on two occasions at Rutgers.
