DeLand, Fla. – USC Upstate standout golfer Adam Goins capped a solid fall season with a tremendous effort at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational by finishing tied for second in a three-way playoff for medalist honors Tuesday afternoon at Victoria Hills Country Club.
Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) overcame a double bogey on his 10th hole of the day with a couple of birdies coming in to force his way into the three-man playoff. Despite finishing tied for second, it was a great way to cap the fall season.
Goins also watched as teammate Ryan Cornfield (Dudley, England) nearly made it a four-man playoff. He birdied three of his last four holes to miss the playoff by a single stroke in what was a strong tournament to end a solid fall season for the freshman.
"Adam and Ryan work so hard and it has paid off in how they represent us," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I think their efforts will serve as an inspiration to the rest of the team during the offseason.
"Adam played well today and I am proud of the way he handles competition," said Lawton. "Ryan had such a great fall and has had a terrific start with us. I am thrilled about his future."
Behind the play of Goins and Cornfield, Upstate shot a final round 301 and finished fourth with an 880 total. The Spartans entered the day with a one-stroke lead in a tight field. Central Florida shot a final round 284 to win the team championship with a 54-hole total of 870. Cornfield finished tied for fourth with a 215 total after shooting a 72 on Tuesday. Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) finished with a great back nine, shooting 33, to card a 75 in the final round.
