Goins Leads Spartans at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

Williamsburg, Va. – USC Upstate standout sophomore Adam Goins opened with a 72 to lead the Spartan men's golf team Sunday afternoon in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate. Goins is tied for 22nd among 150 players in the 29-team tournament.
Goins, from Gaffney, S.C., was the low Spartan on the day as Upstate shot a 297 as a team in the first round of the 54-hole tournament being played on the River Course at Kingsmill. Upstate is just four shots out of the top 10 and eight out of the top five.
Missouri shot a 282 to open the tournament and leads by two strokes over UNC Greensboro (284). Appalachian State is third at 285 and is followed in the top 10 by Old Dominion (288), Radford (289), Eastern Kentucky (290), Wright State (291), William & Mary (291), High Point (292), Loyola (Md.) (293), Georgetown (293), Western Carolina (293) and IPFW.
Delaware is 14th with a 295 and is followed by Francis Marion (296), Upstate (297), James Madison (298), Marquette(298), Boston College (299) and Winthrop (300).
Drake is 21st at 301 and is followed by Longwood (301), Saint Joseph's (Pa.) (305), Bucknell (306), Fairfield (307), St. Peter's (308), St. Francis (Pa.) (313), Washington & Lee (325) and Hampton (366).
Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) shot a 73 for Upstate, just one shot higher than Goins, and stands tied for 37th in the tournament. Although just one shot back of Goins, who is in 22nd, he is 15 places behind on the leaderboard.
Tyler Comer (Spartanburg, S.C.) is tied for 51st after shooting 74. Daniel Revell (Roswell, Ga.), playing in his first tournament where his score will count toward the team score, shot a 78 and is tied with teammate Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.).
Missouri's Emilio Cuartero opened the tournament with a 66 to vault into the individual lead. He is one stroke better than teammate Jace Long.
