Williamsburg, Va. – The USC Upstate men's golf team shot a 306 in the second round and stands tied for 19th after 36 holes at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate played on the River Course at Kingsmill Monday afternoon.
Upstate will complete the tournament with the final round Tuesday morning. The 29-team field spread out a little more on Monday, but the field is still bunched enough that the Spartans have some ability to improve their position. They are 12 strokes out of a top 10 finish and eight out of 11th.
"It's always about fairway, greens and putting. We have not been consistent and patient to keep from trying to overpower this short course. It's got plenty of challenges and Pete Dye has done a great job creating undulating, target greens. We need to play intelligently tomorrow and focus on the middle of the course, even if we have longer distances into the greens. I can definitely see why the PGA tour loved this course for over 20 years. It is in great condition," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton.
Missouri maintained its position atop the leaderboard in the second round. The Tigers own a 576 total and lead Old Dominion by five strokes heading into the final round. Old Dominion is second at 581 and is followed in the top 10 by UNC Greensboro (583), Radford (586), High Point (587), Francis Marion (588), Wright State (589), Longwood (590), Appalachian State (591) and Eastern Kentucky (591).
Loyola (Md.) is 11th at 595 and is followed in the top 20 by Boston College (596), James Madison (598), Georgetown (600), William & Mary (600), Delaware (601), Western Carolina (601), IPFW (602), Upstate (603) and Winthrop (603).
Marquette is 21st with a 608 total and is followed by St. Peter's (613), Drake (615), Saint Joseph's (625), Fairfield (628), Bucknell (629), St. Francis (Pa.) (648), Washington & Lee (653) and Hampton (730).
Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) continued to lead Upstate. He finished with a 76 on Monday and stands tied for 28th in the field of 150 players with a 148 total. Tyler Comer (Spartanburg, S.C.) matched Goins on Monday, also finishing with a 76. He stands tied for 44th with a 150 total. Brain Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) also shot a 76 on Monday and owns a 154 total.
Daniel Revell (Roswell, Ga.) shot a 78 Monday as the fourth-best Spartan on the day. He owns a 36-hole total of 156. Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) is the third-lowest Spartan overall, shooting a 79 on Monday and stands tied for 68th with a 152 total.
Missouri's Jace Long and Emilio Cuartaro and Francis Marion's Sebastian Backlund are all tied for the individual lead heading into the final round. They own a 140 total.
