Ponce, Puerto Rico – USC Upstate sophomore Daniel Revell turned in his third-straight round under par, shooting a 70 in the final round of the Caribbean Intercollegiate to finish second individually. His performance punctuated the day when Upstate moved up three positions on the leaderboard to finish third.
Revell, from Roswell, Ga., fired a 70 in the final round to finish second in the tournament. He was competing in his first collegiate tournament and was simply amazing all three days. He finished with a 212 total, two strokes back of tournament winner Pat Wilson from St. John's. Revell was playing as an individual in the tournament and not listed among the scores that counted for the team.
"Daniel again showed poise and confidence," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He was solid in his game plan and putted well. Following two 71's with a 70 shows me that he can be a competitor. It has been very exciting."
Upstate began the day in the sixth place but a final round 284 propelled the Spartans up the leaderboard. Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) led the way for Upstate with a 68. He finished tied for seventh with a 217 total.
Rollins won the tournament with an 859 total, jumping St. John's for the team title. St. John's was second with an 866 total and was followed by Upstate (877), Laval (878), Old Dominion (878) and IPFW (895).
"Today was a good day for us," said Lawton. "We beat ourselves up the first two rounds with too many mistakes. Matthew led the charge for us and his 68 was a phenomenal round. We finished well across the board and we missed that yesterday. I'm proud of these guys posting the lowest overall round of the tournament today and climbing the leaderboard. Confidence is important and today helps us leave here with some for the next tournament. "
Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) secured a top 10 position after shooting a 71 Wednesday and finishing with a 219 total. Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) finished with a 72 on Wednesday and tied Goins for ninth. Tyler Comer (Spartanburg, S.C.) shot a 72 on Wednesday and finished tied for 19th with a 222 total. Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) carded a 78 and finished 34th with a 240 total.
