Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate sophomore and Gaffney, S.C., native Adam Goins stands tied for 15th after the first day of the Coca-Cola Invitational Monday at the Country Club of Spartanburg. He helped lead Upstate on the day as the Spartans stand 10th on the tournament leaderboard.
Goins turned in a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and shot a 73 in the second to finish the day at 1-under 143. He is tied for 15th in the tournament. He led Upstate on the day as the Spartans shot rounds of 289 and 297 for a 586 total. They are two strokes out of ninth and within 10 of a top five finish.
Charleston Southern shot rounds of 282 and 280 to take the lead after the first day of competition. The Buccaneers have a 562 total. East Tennessee State and Campbell are tied for second at 571 and are followed by Gardner-Webb (575), High Point (576), Wofford (578), Longwood (581), Richmond (582), Samford (584), Upstate (586), Appalachian State (589), Davidson (591), Radford (591), Stetson (592), Wofford B (593), James Madison (595), Elon (596) and Presbyterian (598).
Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) matched Goins in the first round, using three birdies in a row late in the round to shoot a 70. He had three birdies on his final four holes in the second round to shoot 74. He is tied for 20th with a 144 total. Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) shot back-to-back rounds of 74 to shoot 148 and is tied for 38th.
Tyler Comer (Spartanburg) carded rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151 total. He is tied for 66th. Brad Sill (Spartanburg) is tied for 79th with a 154 total after back-to-back rounds of 77.
Campbell's Vaita Guillaume owns the lead heading into Tuesday's final round. He shot rounds of 69 and 64 for an 11-under-par total of 133.
