SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In its first season of full NCAA Division I eligibility after a five-year transition from D-II to D-I, the No. 2 seed USC Upstate baseball team will make its inaugural appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference championship Wednesday at 11 a.m. when they battle No. 5 seed Mercer in DeLand, Fla.
The four-day event hosted by Stetson (Melching Field at Conrad Park) will also feature reigning tournament champion, Belmont (No. 1) as well as Kennesaw State (No. 3), Florida Gulf Coast (No. 4) and Stetson (No. 6).
The Spartans entered the final weekend with a chance to win the regular season crown but dropped all three contests at Mercer (L, 6-7 (14); L, 7-18; L, 2-5). With a win over the Bears Wednesday the club would advance to the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament to face either Kennesaw State or Florida Gulf Coast. With a loss to Mercer, Upstate would face Belmont or Stetson in an elimination contest.
Wednesday's schedule of games is as follows: (2) Upstate vs. (5) Mercer, 11 a.m.; (3) Kennesaw State vs. (4) Florida Gulf Coast, 3 p.m.; (1) Belmont vs. (6) Stetson, 7 p.m. The first three days of the tournament will air free of charge on ASun.TV while Saturday's championship, will air on ESPN3.
