Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate freshman pitcher Chad Sobotka picked up his second major postseason honor when the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) selected him as a Freshman All-American. It marked his second Freshman All-American honor this year after receiving the same honors as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American released by College Baseball Newspaper.
Sobotka, from Sarasota, Fla., made 25 appearances this season, while collecting 12 saves to rank second in the Atlantic Sun. The Spartan righty finished his rookie campaign with a 3-0 record and a 1.72 ERA, fanning 34 batters and walking 16 in 31.1 innings. He boasted an opposing batting average of .196.
Sobotka, Upstate's closer, was an A-Sun All-Freshman selection and was named to the Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List by the NCBWA. Sobotka earned six key saves in conference wins over Lipscomb (2), North Florida, East Tennessee State, Jacksonville and Kennesaw State to help the Spartans stay at the top of the league standings throughout the year.
