
Newman Named Prospect League Pitcher of the Week

Spartanburg, S.C. – After turning in a strong performance on the mound last week, USC Upstate pitcher L.J. Newman has been named the Pitcher of the Week in the Prospect League for the Butler Blue Sox.
The Prospect League is a college wooden bat league with teams across the Midwest in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri.
Newman, a native of Easley, S.C., and a standout at Wren High School, earned Pitcher of the Week honors from the Prospect League after tossing a complete game shutout in Butler's 10-0 victory over the Lorain County Ironmen in his first appearance of the season. He allowed just two hits and struck out six in the win.
Newman had a solid freshman campaign at Upstate in 2012. He was 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He struck out 11 batters in 17.1 innings pitched. At Wren, he as an All-Area, All-Region, All-State and All-America selection as a senior after going 6-2 on the mound and hitting .430 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs.
