
Goins Qualifies for 81st Annual S.C. Amateur Championship

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout golfer and Gaffney, S.C., native Adam Goins shot a 66 to win his qualifying tournament and will compete for the title at the 81st Annual South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship.
The 81st Annual SCGA Amateur Championship will be held Aug. 2-5 at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Goins, who will be a junior at Upstate in 2012-13, qualified for the event after shooting a 66 in the first qualifying tournament at the Windermere Club in Blythewood. He edged out Caleb Sturgeon and Hayden Letien by a stroke to take medalist honors.
Goins will open play at the SCGA Amateur Championship on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 1:40 pm. He will be paired with Travis Rada (Anderson) and Justin Hare (Charleston). He will tee off at 9:40 am in the second round on Friday. Goins is one of 132 players vying for the championship this year. He is the only Upstate golfer who has qualified to play in the championship.
Goins has been the leader on the course in each of his first two seasons at Upstate. As a freshman in 2010-11, he won the Caribbean Classic and went on to post a 74.7 stroke average and three top 20 individual finishes. As a sophomore in 2011-12, he won the Rutgers Invitational and led the team with a 73.9 stroke average and five top 20 individual finishes. He was also named the A-Sun Golfer of the Week following his win at Rutgers.
