Greensboro, N.C. – USC Upstate standout golfer and Gaffney, S.C., native Adam Goins shot back-to-back rounds of 71 and 70 in the second and third rounds to finish tied for 16th at the prestigious Cardinal Amateur Championship over the weekend.
The tournament, which is an invitation-only event, was played at the Cardinal Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Goins was one of just five players from South Carolina to play in the tournament.
Goins, who is a rising junior at Upstate, opened the tournament with a 76 on Friday and needed to scramble a bit to put himself in contention to better his tie for 25th performance from a year ago. He did just that on Saturday. He birdied two holes during his round and finished with 1-over-par 71 to move into a tie for 32nd. He then recorded two birdies and played the back nine with nine pars to shoot even-par 70 on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for 16th.
Goins' performance at the Cardinal Amateur came just one weekend after he finished tied for fourth at the South Carolina Amateur Championship.
