Spartanburg, S.C. – Playing on a familiar course, USC Upstate standout golfer and Gaffney native Adam Goins opened the 81st Annual SCGA Amateur Championship with a 72 at the Country Club of Spartanburg Thursday afternoon.
Goins, who will be a junior this year at Upstate, played well from tee to green, but ran into trouble on the greens.
"I hit the ball really well, but I just couldn't make any putts," said Goins. "I struggled with the putter. I just didn't have a feel for the greens and it was a mental struggle all day long."
Goins opened with a 2-over-par 72 on the par-70 course just eight miles away from the Upstate campus. He is tied for 36th in the tournament, eight strokes back of the leader. Crawford Reeves (Greer) opened with a 64 to take the first round lead by two strokes over four players who shot 66.
Goins is the only Upstate player to compete in the S.C. Amateur Championship. He will tee off at 9:20 am Friday with the opportunity to make the cut for the weekend.
