Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout golfer Adam Goins put his woes with the putter behind him Friday and fired a 2-under-par 68 in the second round to move into a tie for 10th and secure a spot for the weekend at the 81st Annual South Carolina Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
The S.C. Amateur Championship is being played at CCS, just a short drive from the Upstate campus. Goins, who struggled with his putter throughout the first round on Thursday, rallied for a solid round Friday to put himself in contention.
"I started off a little shaky again today, but birdies on six and seven really turned things around," said Goins. "I played the back nine three-under and put myself into position for the weekend. Yesterday was a mental struggle. I worked on some things after the round on the putting green and came out today determined to keep my focus."
Goins' 68 tied for the fourth-best round of the day and allowed him to move from a tie for 36th to start the day to a tie for 10th heading into the third round on Saturday. Goins entered the day eight strokes back of the lead, but shaved two shots off of the deficit.
Crawford Reeves (Greer) entered the day with the tournament lead and ended the day still in the top position. However, he is joined on top of the leaderboard with Cody Proveaux (Leesville) at 6-under-par for the tournament.
