Spartanburg, S.C. – Three straight rounds in the 60's was a solid effort by USC Upstate standout golfer and Gaffney native Adam Goins, but Goins could not overcome the four rounds of 60s by Cody Proveaux as Proveaux claimed the title at the 81st Annual South Carolina Amateur Championship. Goins, though, finished in a tie for fourth.
Goins, who has been the leader on the course for Upstate in each of the last two seasons, had a solid tournament and posted his best-ever finish in the event. After opening the tournament with a 2-over-par 72 on Thursday, he put his putting woes behind him and turned in rounds of 68 on Friday to make the cut and carded a 67 Saturday. He turned in a 2-under 68 in the final round on Sunday to tie for fourth in the tournament. He played the final 54 holes at 7-under.
Goins got off to a slow start and stood 2-over after seven holes and went out at 2-over on the front nine. He birdied the 11th and 12th holes to get back to even-par. After a bogey on the 13th, he birdied the last three holes to finish at 2-under for the day and 5-under for the tournament. He birdied five of the nine holes on the back nine.
"I can't complain at all," said Goins. "I'm happy with the way I finished the tournament. I was really excited to get a top-five finish in the state amateur.
"I got off to another shaky start on the first two holes. I was standing on the 10th tee telling myself I had to get something going. I knew winning was out the window, but I wanted to make a move and I was able to put together a pretty good back nine."
While Goins was simply solid in the tournament, Proveaux (Leesville) was even better over four rounds. He won with a score of 13-under, recording rounds of 69, 65, 65 and 68 to win the championship by three strokes over Caleb Sturgeon (Laurens). Crawford Reeves (Greer), who owned the first round lead and shared the lead with Proveaux after 36 holes, was third at 9-under. Goins and Columbia's Will Murphy each tied for fourth.
Goins was the only Upstate player to play in the S.C. Amateur Championship this year. He will continue his summer of amateur golf next week at the prestigious Cardinal Amateur Championship in Greensboro, N.C. He finished 25th last year in his first appearance in the invitation-only tournament. The event will be played Aug. 10-12 at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club.
