Kiawah Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team finished play in the Invitational at the Ocean Course Tuesday afternoon, finishing the tournament with a 321 to finish 15th, while Ryan Cornfield paced the Spartans for the second consecutive round.
Cornfield (Dudley, England) led the way for Upstate again on Tuesday. He fired the low round of the day for the Spartans, a 77, and finished the 54-hole tournament tied for 44th with a 237 total.
"You have to appreciate Ryan's effort in his first college tournament," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "This is such a strong course. While he didn't win anything individually, he showed the last two rounds that he could play with the field. He led us as a freshman with no college experience. As a team, we have a chance coming up this weekend to show that we learned from this tournament."
Florida won the tournament for the second year in a row after turning in a final round 305 and a 54-hole tournament total of 882. Texas-Arlington was second at 906 and was followed by Houston (912), College of Charleston (913), South Florida (917), UAB (922), Akron (925), Davidson (926), Texas State (926), Stephen F. Austin (932), St. John's (933), Georgia Southern (933), Mercer (934), USC Aiken (935) and Upstate (960).
The Invitational at the Ocean Course was staged on the same course that the PGA Championship was played on just a few weeks ago, hosting the best golfers in the world. It was also the site of the 1992 Ryder Cup and the 2007 Senior PGA Championship. The field for the Invitational boasted eight programs ranked in the Top 100 in the Golfstat rankings.
Cornfield eagled the par-5 seventh hole to highlight his round and the start to his collegiate career. The freshman will look to take the momentum from this tournament into the rest of the fall.
Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) finished the tournament with a 78 and a 238 total to finish one stroke back of Cornfield and in a tie for 48th. Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up a couple of birdies in his round and finished the tournament with an 81 on Tuesday and a 54-hole total of 240. He recorded seven birdies in his last two rounds.
Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) finished the tournament with an 85 on Tuesday and a tournament total of 247. Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) carded a 90 on Tuesday, while Will Graves (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished with a 93.
Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes won the tournament despite shooting an 80 on Tuesday. He finished the tournament with a 220 total.
