Spartanburg, S.C. – After winning the individual championship and leading the USC Upstate men's golf team to the team title at the Rutgers Invitational last weekend, junior Adam Goins has been named the A-Sun Golfer of the Week.
Goins, from Gaffney, S.C., earned the honor after shooting rounds of 66, 70 and 74 to win the individual championship with a 3-under-par score. He won the title by a single stroke. He was tied with one of his playing partners with one hole to play. He made par on the last hole and watched as his playing partner made bogey. The win was the second in a row for Goins at Rutgers and the third overall in his career. This week's A-Sun honor is the second for Goins in his career. He also earned the honor last year after winning the Rutgers Invitational.
Goins' effort also pushed Upstate to the team championship at Rutgers. The Spartans were two strokes down to start the final day, but pushed through to win the championship by three strokes. The win was also the second in a row for Upstate in the tournament and the third team championship in five appearances in the tournament.
In addition to winning the individual championship at Rutgers, Goins also tied a single round school record with his 66 in the first round. He joins former all-time great Josh Gallman along with Tyler Comer, Matthew Hopper (current team member) and McKenzie Oref (current team member) in shooting a round of 66 in their careers at Upstate.
Goins has moved into sole possession of second place on Upstate's career victories list. Gallman tops the list with seven career tournament victories. Goins is also second behind Gallman with a 74.3 career stroke average. Gallman owns the top spot at 72.7.
