Madison, Wisc. – On a blustery, windy day at the University Ridge Golf Course, the USC Upstate men's golf team shot the fifth-best round of the day and finished fourth at the Badger Invitational hosted by Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon.
Upstate shot a 300 Tuesday and moved up one spot on the leaderboard to finish fourth in a field of 14 teams. The Spartans shot rounds of 286, 300 and 300 for an 886 total. They were just six strokes out of a second place finish. The effort at the Badger Invitational comes on the heels of back-to-back tournament titles for Upstate at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate and the Rutgers Invitational, giving the Spartans two wins and a fourth place finish in three tournaments this season.
South Carolina led wire-to-wire to claim the team championship with an 856 total. The Gamecocks won by 24 shots over Kansas (880). Illinois State was third at 893 and was followed by Upstate (886), Austin Peay (891), Wofford (892), Rutgers (893), Missouri-Kansas City (894), Xavier (899), Charleston Southern (899), Wisconsin (900), Marquette (901), Northern Illinois (923) and Northern Kentucky (924).
Upstate counted scores of 71, 74, 74 and 81 for its 300 score on Tuesday. Ryan Cornfield rebounded from a scoring error Monday and shot a 71 Tuesday to lead the Spartan cause. Adam Goins and Taylor White each turned in a 74, while Sebastian Lopez Bulla carded an 81. Danny Brock finished the tournament with an 83.
Goins was the top Spartan in the tournament, claiming a Top 10 finish. He finished tied for eighth with a 219 total. White finished tied for 14th with a 221 total, giving the Spartans two players in the Top 15. Lopez Bulla finished the 54-hole tournament with a 227 total and a tie for 41st. Brock claimed a tie for 52nd with a 231 total, while Cornfield's no-score from Monday prevented him from being able to post a 54-hole total.
Just as South Carolina led wire-to-wire to win the team championship, Gamecock Caleb Sturgeon also led wire-to-wire to win the individual title. He finished the tournament at 10-under-par (206).
Upstate will take a month off before ending the fall season at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Kiawah Island, S.C., Nov. 3-5.
