
Spartans Close Out Fall Season at Wendy's Kiawah Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team will close out a successful fall season when in returns to action Sunday through Tuesday at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic being played at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Upstate will make its third straight appearance in the Wendy's Kiawah Classic and will look to build on what has been a tremendous start to the season. Last year, Ryan Cornfield was the top Spartan finisher with an 18th-place finish in a large field of 26 teams. Upstate's best team finish came in 2011 when the Spartans finished tied for seventh in a 21-team field.
The Wendy's Kiawah Classic is being played on the Turtle Point course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course plays at 7,061 yards and is a par-72 layout. The 54-hole event will be played over three days with 18 holes played each day. The tournament will feature another large field with 18 teams competing for the team title. Joining Upstate and host Charleston Southern in the tournament are Campbell, Creighton, Elon, George Washington, Jacksonville State, Marquette, Minnesota, Missouri, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, South Carolina, Towson, Western Kentucky, Winthrop and Wisconsin. There are five teams ranked in the Top 100 in the latest Golfstat rankings in this week's tournament: South Carolina (33), Missouri (53), Winthrop (57), Minnesota (59) and Jacksonville State (92). Upstate enters the event ranked No. 114.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send a different lineup to the Wendy's Kiawah Classic than he has in the three previous tournaments this season. Freshman Trey Taylor joins the lineup for the first time and will team with Adam Goins, Ryan Cornfield, Taylor White and Sebastian Lopez Bulla.
