
Upstate Wraps Up Non-Conference Play Saturday at Furman

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team completes the non-conference portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. contest against the Furman Paladins inside Timmons Arena.
The Spartans go into the matchup with a 4-6 overall record while the Paladins are 6-5 on the season.
Upstate will also be putting the finishing touches on its five-game road trip Saturday. The Spartans are currently 1-3 on the road swing following a 65-61 loss at Virginia Tech on Dec. 15. Upstate defeated UNC Asheville 67-66 on Dec. 7 in Asheville.
The Spartans posted three players in double-figures scoring last Sunday against the Hokies led by Lauren Bogle's career-high 13 points off the bench. The reigning A-Sun Newcomer of the Week also recorded a career-high six rebounds, five field goals and four steals in 29 minutes of action. She was joined in double-digits by Brittany Clency with 11 points and Sharmayne Edwards' 10. Brittany Starling had a team-high nine rebounds.
Starling leads Upstate this season with 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She is one of two players averaging in double-figures as Edwards is pouring in 10.6 points per contest. Shelby Hicks ranks second on the team in rebounding as she is pulling down 5.5 per game. Starling and Hicks both rank in the top 10 for the Atlantic Sun in several categories. Hicks is fifth in the league in blocked shots, while Starling is seventh in field-goal percentage and eighth in rebounding.
Furman is led by third-year head coach Jackie Carson. She currently owns a 46-55 record at Furman and is 1-0 against Upstate.
Holli Wilkins is one of two players averaging 10 or more points per game this season for the Paladins. She leads the team offensively with 14.6 points per game, while Brittany Hodges averages 10.2 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game.
The Spartans will be facing off against Furman for the 12th time Saturday afternoon. Furman leads the all-time series 7-4 and holds a 5-1 advantage when playing in Greenville. The Paladins held on for an 85-80 victory in overtime last season at the Hodge Center.
Upstate returns home on Jan. 2, 2014 when it hosts Northern Kentucky in the A-Sun opener for both teams. Tip off will be at 7 p.m.
