Augusta, Ga. – USC Upstate standout senior golfer Brad Sill shot a school record-tying 66 in the first round and finished the tournament at 8-under par to win the one-day Forest Hills Intercollegiate Saturday. The Spartans finished tied for third in the 36-hole tournament.
Sill, from Spartanburg, S.C., became the sixth player in the history of the program to shoot a 66, tying the school record. He is just the second to shoot a 66 on a par-72 course. He joins current teammates Adam Goins, Matthew Hopper and McKenzie Oref, former teammate Tyler Comer and former all-time great Josh Gallman with the low round in program history. Oref is the other Spartan player to shoot 66 on a par-72 course.
"Brad was simply in the zone today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He was excited about the course layout and played to his strengths. It was his first college win and was well deserved. Overall, I am pleased with our third-place finish. We beat a lot of respected programs on a tough day with the weather."
Sill was simply a birdie machine Saturday. He made 12 birdies and posted four bogeys on the day to shoot 66 and 70 for an 8-under-par score to win the tournament by a stroke over Augusta State's Alex Wennstam.
Upstate finished tied for third in the team standings after shooting 591 with rounds of 293 and 298. Augusta State won the tournament with a 570 total. Northern Illinois was second at 586.
