Braselton, Ga. – On a day when more than half of the teams shot higher scores than in the first round, the USC Upstate men's golf team followed suit and shot a 318 in the second round to slip to ninth at the 2013 A-Sun Men's Championship Monday afternoon at the Legends Course at the Chateau Elan Resort.
Upstate counted two rounds of 80 or above en route to the 318. The Spartans are ninth, but are still just eight strokes out of a Top 5 finish. Meanwhile, Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) continued to lead the Spartans and is tied for 17th individually after shooting a 77 on Tuesday.
"We didn't help ourselves today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It was a cold morning and we got off to a slow start which hurt us. I am proud that Sebastian (Lopez Bulla) finished well and Sean (Hassell) had a better round. But, overall, we left a lot out there."
North Florida began the round with the lead and after shooting a 301, maintained the lead after 36 holes. The Ospreys own a 590 total and are in the lead by one stroke over Kennesaw State (591). ETSU is third at 603 and is followed by Jacksonville (613), Northern Kentucky (618), Mercer (620), Florida Gulf Coast (624), Lipscomb (624), Upstate (626) and Stetson (630).
After going out in 4-over 40 on the first nine (Upstate started on the back nine), Goins made eight pars to go along with one bogey on his second nine to shoot 77. He owns a 153 total and is four strokes out of a Top 10 finish heading into the final round on Tuesday.
"Adam battled hard to lead us," said Lawton. "Our best is still out there and we will need to find a comfortable zone and stay in it, not just reacting to things that just happened."
Ryan Cornfield (Dudley, England) stands tied for 19th with a 155 total after posting a 79 in his second round. Sebastian Lopez Bulla (Bogota, Colombia) shot an 80, but played his final six holes at 1-over to rally his round. He is tied for 27th with a 157 total.
Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) carded an 85 and is tied for 43rd on the leaderboard with a 164 total. Sean Hassell (Walhalla, S.C.) improved his score by nine strokes over Sunday's opening round and gave Upstate its fourth score on the day with an 82.
Kennesaw State's Austin Vick shot an even-par 72 and owns a three-stroke lead with a 143 total heading into the final round on Tuesday.
