Spartanburg, S.C. – After winning the team championship at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate to open the season earlier this week at the Country Club of South Carolina, the USC Upstate men's golf team returns to the Rutgers Invitational this weekend, a tournament in which the Spartans have enjoyed tremendous success.
To say that Upstate has enjoyed its time playing in the Rutgers Invitational is an understatement. The Spartans have previously made five trips to the tournament since 2007 and have taken home three team and four individual championships in the event. Upstate is the two-time defending team champions in the tournament, while senior Adam Goins will attempt to win his third straight individual title in the event. Upstate won the team championship in 2007 in its first tournament playing as a member of NCAA Division I and also won in 2011 and 2012.
Upstate will compete in the 54-hole Rutgers Invitational Friday and Saturday, playing 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday. Joining Upstate and host Rutgers in the 14-team field are Adelphi, Bethune-Cookman, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, La Salle, Lehigh, Manhattan, Monmouth, Rider, St. Peter's and Wagner. The Rutgers University Golf Course plays at 6,337 yards and is a par-71 layout.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will play the same lineup he used earlier this week when the Spartans won the championship at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate. Lawton will employ the talents of Goins, Ryan Cornfield, Danny Brock, Taylor White and Sebastian Lopez Bulla this weekend. The team combined to shoot 12-under over 54 holes at the Springhill and broke the school's single round school record with an 11-under-par 277 effort in the second round.
