
Spartans Set for Regional Field at Camden Collegiate Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team will return to the course when it travels to Camden, S.C., to play in the Camden Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Carolina at the Camden Country Club Saturday and Sunday.
Upstate is making its first appearance in the 54-hole Camden Collegiate Invitational which features a strong regional field with 14 of the 15 schools hailing from South Carolina or North Carolina with the other coming in from Virginia. Upstate is joined in the field by Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Presbyterian, Radford, South Carolina, USC Aiken and Wofford. The tournament field features four teams ranked in the Top 100 in the latest Golfstat rankings, three on the Division I level and one on the Division II level. South Carolina (No. 10), Radford (No. 78) and Furman (No. 100) are ranked in Division I, while USC Aiken is the top-ranked team in the Division II ranks. There are seven teams in the field ranked in the Top 150 in the latest rankings.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Taylor White, Ryan Cornfield, Sean Hassell, Sebastian Lopez Bulla and Tom Schofield into action this week. White, Cornfield, Hassell and Lopez Bulla have played in every tournament this season, while Schofield is making his collegiate debut as a freshman. White and Cornfield are tied for the team lead with a 74.0 stroke average. The two also own Upstate's three Top 10 individual finishes with Cornfield topping the team with two. A native of Barbados, Schofield played in several international junior events during his prep years and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Florida Match Play Championship last year.
Upstate Quick Notes
- Upstate will make its sixth appearance in a tournament played on a par-70 course when it plays in the Camden Collegiate Invitational this week. Previously, Upstate played in the Bobcat Invitational at Cuscowilla Golf Club in the spring of 2006 and 2007 when the program was in NCAA Division II and at the ODU Seascape Invitational at the Seascape Resort in the fall of 2007, 2008 and 2009 as members of NCAA Division I.
- Current Spartans Taylor White and Ryan Cornfield rank second and third on Upstate's career stroke average list. With a minimum of 20 rounds played, White ranks second with a 73.87 average, while Cornfield is third at 74.03. They both trail all-time great Josh Gallman with a 72.68 average.
- Ryan Cornfield leads the Spartans with two Top 10 individual finishes in three tournaments this season.
- After finishing in the 80's in each round of the Rees Jones Invitational to start the season, Sean Hassell has hit a groove and is averaging 75.8 over the last six rounds.
- Ryan Cornfield leads all current Spartans with eight career Top 10 individual finishes and five career Top 5 efforts. Taylor White is second with four Top 10's and two Top 5's.
- Tied with a 74.0 stroke average for the season, Ryan Cornfield and Taylor White also own above .500 winning percentages against the competition head-to-head. Cornfield owns a .929 percentage, while White is at .733.
- Upstate has made 83 birdies and four eagles on the season. The Spartans converted a season-high 35 birdies at the Rees Jones Invitational Sept. 21-23 at the Haig Point Course on Daufuskie Island, S.C. Upstate made a season-best two eagles in the Badger Invitational Sept. 28-30 at University Ridge Golf Course at Wisconsin.
