Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team will look to close out the fall portion of its schedule in grand fashion when it plays in the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Sunday through Tuesday on the Turtle Point Course at the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Golf Resort.
Upstate is making its fourth appearance in the Wendy's Kiawah Classic. The Spartans claimed an 8th-place finish in last year's event, one off of the 7th-place effort turned in by the 2011 squad. Ryan Cornfield is the leading returning Spartan in the tournament after finishing in a tie for 13th last year with rounds of 77, 71 and 73.
Upstate is one of 20 teams that will compete for the team championship. The Spartans are joined in the large field by host Charleston Southern, Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Coastal Carolina, Creighton, Gardner-Webb, George Washington, Georgia Southern, GRU Augusta, High Point, Jacksonville State, Marquette, Missouri, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Temple, Western Kentucky and Winthrop. There are seven teams ranked in the Top 100 in the latest Golfstat ranking in the field, including No. 37 Winthrop and No. 47 GRU Augusta.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will use a new lineup for the final tournament of the fall, sending Cornfield, Taylor White, Sebastian Lopez Bulla, Tom Schofield and Andrew Purcell into action. Cornfield and White have been consistent leaders and have played in every tournament this season. The same holds true for Lopez Bulla. However, Purcell and Schofield have just one tournament under their belts this season and their appearances came separate from each other. The team averages 300.2 per round.
