White, Hassell Lead Spartans at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

Raleigh, N.C. – Taylor White and Sean Hassell led the USC Upstate men's golf team on the first day of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by N.C. State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course Monday.
White stands tied for 37th with a 149 total after rounds of 74 and 75. Hassell is just one shot back and in a tie for 42nd at 150 after rounds of 76 and 74. The two combined to lead the team as Upstate carded rounds of 297 and 309 for a 606 total. The Spartans are 16th on the leaderboard after being tied for ninth after the first round.
N.C. State leads the tournament with a 566 total and will carry a three-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round. East Tennessee State is second at 569 and is followed by East Carolina (575), UNC Greensboro (577), Seton Hall (582), Georgia Southern (586), Lipscomb (589), N.C. State "B" (590), Rhode Island (592), Campbell (593), Temple (593), Loyola (Md.) (593), George Washington (593), Wofford (594), Bowling Green State (603), Upstate (606), Western Carolina (607) and Boston College (607).
Upstate opened the tournament with a 297 to stand tied for ninth in the 18-team tournament. Sebastian Lopez Bulla led the Spartans with a 1-over 72 with three birdies in his round to finish at 72. After running his score to 2-under early in the round, Ryan Cornfield carded a 74. White totaled two birdies in the round and shot 75, while Hassell opened with a 76 with two birdies for the Spartans' fourth countable score.
White and Hassell each shot 74 to lead Upstate in the afternoon round. Hassell's round was buoyed by an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. The Spartans got an 80 from Cornfield and 81 from Lopez Bulla to round out the four countable scores in the afternoon. In all, Upstate made 12 birdies in the first round, but that production fell off to four with an eagle in the second.
ETSU's Adrian Meronck leads the tournament after 36 holes. He owns a 138 total and will enter the final round with a one-stroke lead.
