Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head men's golf coach Todd Lawton announces the signing of Easley's Matt Carter to a national letter of intent during the early signing period. Carter will join the program for the 2015-16 season.
Carter is ranked No. 14 in the overall South Carolina Junior Golf Association rankings and No. 7 in the Class of 2015. He helped lead Easley to a second-place finish at the 2014 4A State Tournament, posting a 12th-place finish with a 228 total on a challenging Furman University course. He helped lead the green Wave to a third-place finish as a sophomore in 2013, placing 17th individually.
"Matt is a fantastic addition to our Upstate golf family," said Lawton. "He will continue our tradition of having strong golfers from Easley in our program and I know that he can compete at the highest level. Overall, he is proficient in nearly every facet of the game and has proven he can manage the toughest course conditions and competition. He's a complete recruit on and off the course and I am thrilled he chose Upstate."
Carter has had a standout career in junior golf in addition to his accomplishments in high school. Following his 17th-place effort in the 2013 4A State Tournament, he had a strong summer capped off by an appearance in the semifinals of the 2013 S.C. Junior Match Play Championship before losing to the eventual champion, 2&1. Following his 12th-place finish in the 2014 4A State Tournament, he had a strong summer and fall of junior golf. He finished 10th at the SC Junior Amateur Championship with rounds of 72, 72 and 69 in July and was 21st with back-to-back rounds of 74 at The Blade in Greenville. He finished second at the Orange Jacket Classic in Pickens in October with rounds of 65 and 69 and was third at the Jimmy Creed in Camden with rounds of 74 and 72. He was 21st at the Jimmy Self in Greenwood with rounds of 70 and 77. He claimed titles at the Morgan Lucas Team Championships and the GSA Junior Open.
An outstanding athlete, he was a member of Easley's junior varsity baseball team in the seventh grade and the junior varsity basketball team in the ninth before giving both up to concentrate on his golf career. He is also a standout student and carries a 3.35 GPA.
