
Upstate Aims for Third Straight Win Sunday against IPFW

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team returns home Sunday afternoon as it welcomes the IPFW Mastodons to the Hodge Center for a 3 p.m. contest.
The Spartans are looking for their third straight victory as they traveled to Greensboro, N.C. Thursday night and walked away with a 69-60 win over UNC Greensboro. Brittany Starling poured in a game-high 17 points for Upstate while Shelby Hicks picked up her first double-double of the season on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sharmayne Edwards added 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Brittany Clency set two new career-highs in rebounds (9) and steals (5) to go with 12 points and three assists.
Upstate forced UNC Greensboro into 27 turnovers and attempted 14 more free-throws. The Spartans converted the 27 turnovers into 26 points and their 25 offensive rebounds led to 23 second-chance points. Upstate was also successful on 20-of-27 free-throws while UNC Greensboro hit on just 8-of-13.
With her 15 points at UNCG, Edwards remains the team-leader for Upstate offensively as she is averaging 15.0 points per game and is one of two players scoring in double-figures. Starling pours in 12.8 points per contest and leads the team in rebounding at 8.0 per game. Clency is tied for first in the conference with Stetson's Jama Sharp in assists per game at 5.0, Edwards is fifth in scoring and Starling ranks sixth in rebounding.
IPFW, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Chris Paul, is coming off a 77-59 victory at home over Evansville Friday night to improve its record to 2-1 on the season. The Mastodons have won two in a row including a 90-51 victory over Grace on Nov. 18. Haley Seibert leads the IPFW offense in scoring with 18.0 points per game, while KeShyra McCarver is averaging 14.3 points and a team-leading 8.3 rebounds per contest.
The Spartans and Mastodons are meeting for the first time Sunday afternoon.
