Spartanburg, S.C. – After winning the co-individual championship at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Tuesday, USC Upstate standout Ryan Cornfield earned A-Sun Golfer of the Week honors for men's golf.
Cornfield had a standout tournament to close out the fall at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic. After opening with back-to-back rounds of even-par 72, he went low in the final round and posted a 6-under 66 to move from a tie for sixth into position to win his first career collegiate individual championship. He watched as Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes ended his round with a 63 to tie Cornfield for medalist honors at 6-under for the tournament. Wolfes is ranked No. 52 in the nation and Cornfield topped three more players ranked in the Top 90 in the nation in the tournament.
"There are many talented and hard-working players in our conference and I am happy that Ryan has been recognized this week," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He has made such a difference for us this fall and I am excited he is receiving this award. It is well deserved."
Cornfield recorded 15 birdies in the tournament, seven in the final round, to win the individual title. He ranked in a tie for third in the tournament for par-5 scoring at 7-under. His 15 birdies were 29 percent of Upstate's season-high 52 in the tournament.
Cornfield earned his first A-Sun weekly honor of the season and the first for the men's golf program this year. The selection marked the third of his career, earning the other two weekly honors after finishing second in helping the Spartans win team tournament titles in 2013.
Cornfield has had a record-breaking and tying year so far in 2014-15. His 66 Tuesday tied the school's all-time record for most shots under-par in a round at 6-under. He is tied with former players McKenzie Oref and Brad Sill for that honor. He turned in a 65 in the Camden Collegiate Invitational in October to break the school's low-round record, though it came on a par-70 course (-5).
Cornfield finished the fall season with a 72.07 stroke average and an astounding .966 head-to-head winning percentage against all tournament players. He has four Top 10 finishes in five tournaments this fall, claiming Top 5 efforts in three of those outings.
