Spartanburg, S.C. – Following nine days off during the Christmas holidays, the USC Upstate men's basketball team closes 2014 Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host Montreat College from the Hodge Center.
Upstate (9-4) is attempting to win its 10th game of the season before the start of January, which would mark the first time in school history the Spartans have accomplished that feat.
The Spartans enter play coming off a 53-51 victory at Mississippi State Dec. 20 for the program's second consecutive victory over the Southeastern Conference. Senior Ty Greene scored 12 points and hit the game-winning jumper with 6.4 seconds remaining to propel the Spartans to the victory. Damian Goodwin added a career-high 14 points and Fred Miller scored 10.
Greene stands second in the league with 16.3 points per game and Miller ranks ninth with 13.2. The duo also rank atop the conference standings in steals, as Greene paces the A-Sun with 2.6 per game and Miller is second with 2.2 per game.
Sophomore post Michael Buchanan leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference with 5.2 rebounds per game.
Montreat arrives in Spartanburg with a 4-6 overall record following its 85-74 loss Dec. 10 at Emory & Henry College. Since that game, Montreat has played two Division I teams, Presbyterian and Campbell, and has dropped those contests by an average of 18.5 points per game. Games involving Division I schools and non-Division I schools are recorded as exhibition games for the non-Division I school and do not go for or against the overall record.
USC Upstate and Montreat College will be meeting on the hardwood for the second time when the two schools tipoff Tuesday. Upstate won the only other meeting when the Spartans won 97-49 (Dec. 30, 1997. Upstate is 2-0 against non-Division I opponents this year and is winning by an average of 64.0 points per game.
