
Upstate Back in Action Tuesday at College of Charleston

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team returns from Christmas break Tuesday evening when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to face the College of Charleston Cougars at 7 p.m. from TD Arena.
Upstate (7-5) is riding a three-game winning streak after picking up a 67-60 victory over UNC Asheville on Dec. 21 from the Hodge Center, wrapping up a three-game home stand. The Spartans won their tenth straight home game behind a team-high 16 points by Brittany Clency to lead three players in double-figures. Upstate also received 14 points each from Raven Jefferson and Kristen Dickerson. Jefferson grabbed a career-high eight rebounds against UNC Asheville to tie for the team-lead along with Brittany Starling.
Starling and Sharmayne Edwards lead the Spartans offense as both are scoring over 10 points per game this season. Edwards pours in a team-high 13.8 points per game to rank sixth in the A-Sun in scoring, while Starling contributes 11.8 points. Starling sits tied for fourth in the league in rebounding with 8.5 per game, while Clency is sixth in assists at 3.2 per contest.
College of Charleston enters the contest with a 1-9 overall record after falling 60-51 Sunday afternoon at South Carolina State. The Cougars are under the direction of first-year head coach Candice Jackson. Erin Hall is the lone College of Charleston player averaging in double-digits with a team-best 11.0 points per game. Breanna Bolden is grabbing a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per game and Shiclasia Brown dishes out 3.6 assists per contest.
The Cougars lead the all-time series over Upstate 16-1 dating back to the 1979-80 season and have won the last two meetings. College of Charleston swept the Spartans last season with a 75-71 victory in Spartanburg followed by an 85-71 win in Charleston during the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) Tournament. Upstate last defeated the Cougars on Dec. 3, 2007 in Charleston by a score of 73-62.
