Greenville, S.C. – On a windy and blustery day, the USC Upstate men's golf team shot a final round 304 and finished sixth at the Furman Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at the Furman University Golf Course.
Upstate finished the tournament with an 882 total, finishing one shot back of a fifth-place finish and seven back of fourth.
"Days like this remind us that we still have a lot to work on," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "There's not one thing to point to as the reason for our round today. It was a little bit of everything. Transitioning from our warm-up to the first tee is a big area where we can improve in preparing for our next tournament."
Tenth-ranked Virginia Tech and 54th-ranked Georgia State tied for the team championship with an 855 total. Both teams shot 287 Sunday to earn the tie for the tournament title. Kennesaw State, ranked No. 35, finished third with an 862 total and was followed by Akron (875), Elon (881), Upstate (882), Wofford (887), Furman (889), Charleston Southern (890), Samford (898), Temple (898), Gardner-Webb (901), Winthrop (902), Western Carolina (903), Marshall (903), Presbyterian (908), Francis Marion (910) and Jacksonville (910).
Sebastian Lopez Bulla finished as the top Spartan in the tournament with a 219 total. He shot a 74 on Sunday, finishing with four birdies and playing each nine at 1-over. He finished in a tie for 16th. Adam Goins also shot a 74 and finished tied for 22nd with a 221 total to give the Spartans two players in the Top 25. He had two birdies on the day and also played each nine at 1-over.
"Sebastian played a good tournament and really worked hard for pars today," said Lawton. "He had 24 putts, which was stellar. Adam was good despite battling some swing issues. The wind gusted a lot this afternoon and I wish there was a way to simulate that in practice, because it would have helped some for sure."
Sean Hassell and Taylor White each shot 78 for the third and fourth countable scores for Upstate. Ryan Cornfield carded a final round 81. Cornfield claimed a tie for 37th with a 223 total. Hassell was a shot back at 224 and finished tied for 42nd. White finished with a 227 total and in a tie for 59th. Danny Brock played as an individual and turned in an 80 Sunday.
Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone led wire-to-wire to win medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206 total.
