Braselton, Ga. – Ryan Cornfield shot a 73 to help USC Upstate shoot a 305 in the second round of the 2014 A-Sun Men's Golf Championship Monday as the Spartans closed to within a shot of jumping a spot on the leaderboard.
The A-Sun Men's Championship is being played on the Legends Course at the Chateau Elan Resort. Upstate is in seventh place heading into the final round of the tournament Tuesday. The Spartans own a 616 total and trail Lipscomb by a single stroke at 615. They are 13 shots out of a top five finish.
"Even though our total score didn't improve as much as I had hoped, I am proud of the guys for fighting through to the end and finishing strong," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We finally broke through with some good putts for birdie. No doubt that this creates some momentum for the final round."
Mercer will begin the final round with a two-stroke lead. The Bears won a 581 total after rounds of 290 and 291. Kennesaw State is second at 583 and is followed on the leaderboard by ETSU (592), North Florida (592), Jacksonville (603), Lipscomb (615), Upstate (616), Northern Kentucky (619), Florida Gulf Coast (623) and Stetson (626).
When Upstate shot 311 to open the tournament Sunday, it counted just two scores in the 70's for the round. Monday was much different as all four of the Spartans' countable scores were in the 70's, led by Cornfield's 73. He went out in 2-over-par, but played his final nine holes at 1-under to shoot 73. He converted three birdies on the day. Adam Goins posted the team's second best score on the day, finishing with a 72 after posting three birdies. It was six strokes better than his first round score Sunday.
"Adam and Ryan played with the best in the field today, and that is all I can ask out of them," said Lawton.
Sebastian Lopez Bulla and Taylor White each carded a 79 Monday for the third and fourth countable scores for Upstate. Lopez Bulla, who led the Spartans with a 73 Sunday, made a pair of birdies on the day, while White converted three. Danny Brock finished the round with an 81.
Cornfield is the top Spartan in the tournament and is tied for 17th with a 150 total. Lopez Bulla is tied for 21st at 152, while Goins is tied for 27th at 154 to give Upstate three players in the Top 30.
Mercer's James Beale owns a one-stroke lead heading into the final round with a 143 total.
