Cornfield Nails Down Top 20 Finish at A-Sun Men's Golf Championship

Braselton, Ga. – Ryan Cornfield shot a 77 in the final round of the A-Sun Men's Golf Championship on the Legends Course at the Chateau Elan Resort Tuesday and finished tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard to lead USC Upstate in the tournament. The Spartans claimed seventh place in the event.
Cornfield finished the tournament with rounds of 77, 73 and 77 to finish at 227 to lead the Upstate cause. He had one birdie in his round today and eight total for the championship.
Despite shooting a 307 in the final round, Upstate could not make up any ground on the field and claimed seventh place with a 923 total. The Spartans are on the bubble for receiving a berth in the NCAA Regionals. As of the completion of the regular season and A-Sun Championship, the 2013-14 Spartans currently own the program's top season stroke average, coming in at 294.5 to top the 295.2 recorded by the 2007-08 squad. The team achieved the mark with seven different players seeing action in tournament play. In addition, freshman Taylor White currently owns a 73.8 stroke average which would topple all-time great Josh Gallman's freshman scoring average of 74.6 set in 2006-07.
Mercer finished the tournament with an 874 total to win the championship by six strokes over Kennesaw State (880). ETSU was third at 884 and was followed by North Florida (895), Lipscomb (915), Jacksonville (917), Upstate (923), Stetson (927), Northern Kentucky (929) and Florida Gulf Coast (934). The Spartans finished just six strokes back of sixth and eight back of fifth.
Upstate counted scores of 75, 77, 77 and 78 to shoot 307 Tuesday. White carded the low round of the day for Upstate with a 75. He went out in 1-over-par and played his final 11 holes at 2-over to finish with the 75. Sebastian Lopez Bulla matched Cornfield's 77 on the day, totaling two birdies in his round. Danny brock, playing in his final A-Sun Championship, shot 78 with a birdie. Adam Goins, also playing in his final A-Sun Championship, carded an 81 and posted three birdies on the day.
Lopez Bulla finished with a 229 total and in a tie for 22nd to give Upstate two players in the Top 25 in the tournament. Goins and White tied each other in 35th with a 235 total, while Brock was tied for 46th with a 243 total.
Mercer's Trey Rule won the A-Sun individual championship after shooting 1-under-par 215 for the tournament. He shot a 71 in the final round.
