2014 A-Sun Men's Golf Postseason Awards
Spartanburg, S.C. – After leading the Spartans with a 73.0 stroke average and three top five individual finishes, USC Upstate sophomore Ryan Cornfield was named to the A-Sun All-Conference team, announced the A-Sun Tuesday. Cornfield was not the only Spartan to receive honors as Duncan's Taylor White was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team.
Cornfield, from Dudley, England, earned second team all-conference honors from the A-Sun. It marks the first time since 2010 that an Upstate men's golfer has received postseason honors from the league.
"I am so excited with the direction all of our players have taken our team this year and Ryan has been a leader in that movement," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Ryan has always been a hard worker and a tremendous competitor. This award is the culmination of a year-long amount of hard work and dedication he has put into his game and our team. I am excited that he has been recognized for his efforts."
Cornfield played in all 10 tournaments for Upstate and placed in a tie for 17th at the A-Sun Championships. He claimed two second-place efforts on the season, with both helping lead the Spartans to team championships at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate and the Rutgers Invitational. He received A-Sun Player of the Week accolades after both efforts. He also finished third at the Bash of the Beach, also helping lead the team to the tournament title.
Cornfield posted 11 rounds under-par for the season, turning in the team's lowest round of the year with a 67 in the second round of the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate in September. He shot six rounds in the 60's. He owns a 595-186 head-to-head record for the season for a team-best .811 winning percentage.
White turned in a record-breaking season for Upstate in his first year in the program and is the first Upstate men's golfer to earn all-freshman honors since the Spartans joined Division I in 2007-08. He played in all 10 events for the Spartans and broke the program's all-time freshman scoring average at 73.8, topping the mark set by all-time great and three-time All-ASun selection Josh Gallman.
White ranked third on the team in scoring average and turned in 10 rounds at par or better for the year. He claimed three Top 10 individual efforts, including a 7-under-par tie for second at the Bash at the Beach to help Upstate claim the team championship. He posted a .717 winning percentage with a 560-221 head-to-head record.
"Taylor has come in and added excitement and a competitive edge to our program," said Lawton. "He has done something that no other freshman has done in our program on the Division I level. I know that he looks to continue to play his best and I am excited for all of the accolades that have come his way in such a young career."
